Seems to be different on wxWidgets 3.1.x vs 3.2.x.

It feels like there have been too many failed attempts and not
enough (maybe zero?) successes so it's just too confusing.

This means we can fix the case of a VF having no known size in a nice way,
in turn fixing problems caused by the fix to #2775.
